Santería is a system of beliefs that merge the Yoruba religion (brought to the New World by slaves imported to the Caribbean to work the sugar plantations) with Roman Catholic and Native Indian traditions. These slaves carried with them various religious traditions, including a trance for communicating with their ancestors and deities, animal sacrifice and sacred drumming. In Cuba, this religious tradition has evolved into what we now recognize as Santería. In 2001, there were an estimated 22,000 practitioners in the US alone, but the number may be higher as some practitioners may be reluctant to disclose their religion on a government census or to an academic researcher. Im a fully committed priest of Ochun, and thru the years I had helped with their everyday problems. Many that I have help are Black Hispanic and Caribbean descent but as the religion moves out of the inner cities and into the suburbs, a growing number of African-American and European-American heritage will continue to grow. The traditional Lukumi religion and its Santería counterpart can be found in many parts of the world today, including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and even the United States, which was mainly the result of Puerto Rican migration. A very similar religion called Candomblé is practiced in Brazil, along with a rich variety of other Afro-American religions.

Rules and Expectations for Ile Oñi Tolocun By Medium Salome

We have differentes rules for the House depending on the position of the godchildren non initiated and if they get initiated before they do so, they receive also what we called

1.Rules for Non Initiated to be a part of Ile Oni Tolocun
2.Rules for Igbodun de Yoko Osha ( When they become initiated.)
3.Rules for the first 3 months of Yoko Osha ( first 3 months of being initiated as an iyawo.)
4.Rules after the first 3 months of Yoko Osha.
5.Rules after the first year, meaning finishing your iyaworaje.

I will write you here the 1. Rule for Non Initiated, all the others rules are given upon determination of Initiating in my Ile.

The person non initiated who want to be a part of Ile Oni Tolocun will need to present in the Ile and offering of 1 plate, 2 coconuts, 2 candles, and a donation of money meaning $1, $5, $10 or whatever they want. They will need to bring this and put it to Oshun, This is done in the house when the person want to be a part of the house and the godmother ask then in this case Oshun if she will approved that this person will be a part of the Ile. Then, the godmother give Obi to Oshun asking this, If Oshun says yes, then this person automatically become a godchildren of the house.
The person non initiated who will like to be a part of the Ile, cannot be a part of any other Ile, and if they were part of another Ile, with respect they will have to let their Ile know with reasons why, they are living that Ile, this is do because, the Orisha will see that you have respect, and that you are finding another Ile, because of any reasons that you may have, not learning from the other Ile, having problems with godparent, or whatever that the reason is. We ask that you let that Ile know that you no longer want to be a part of the Ile, but that you appreciate all the good or help that they give to you in the past.
The Godchildren of the Ile have to give enough proof to the Ile before they ever decide to get initiated that they respect the Ile, Oshun, Eggun etc.if they dont proof this to me I cant refused at any time to not initiated them.
The future godmother would have to give proper documentation of the Rules and Expectations of the Ile to the future godchildren so that they know what they have to do, and how, and also before they get initiated they will have to go all over the rules and expectations that they will have to follow for 1 year and after the year.
The godmother have to answer to the non initiated godchildren of the Ile all the questions that they may have at all times about the Eggun, Orisha, Palo etc and they will have to guide the godchildren so that they know why things are done one way or another. Certains Questions regarding the Initiations cannot be answer.
The future godchildren will studied all the documentation that the godmother will give to him/her and will answer any questions that they may have regarding them.
Before the godchildren gets initiated in Yoko Osha, the godmother will have to do 3 spiritual mass investigating hers/his ancestors including family, non family, palo, congos, etc. and in the last Mass they will get crown their principal eggun to their head, because we said, Iku Logbi Osha, The eggun is first, without them, we cannot do anything, so before a person gets initiated we make sure that eggun is happy and that we investigate everything about them.
The godchildren who will be initiated to Yoko Osha, will have 10 days before initiation day, to bring to the Ile all the materials, clothing, soupterines, tools etc to the Ile for the Initiation as well as the Owo (money) to the Ile for the Yoko Osha,
The godchildren will have 3 days before Yoko Osha, and the Ile prohibited to drink any type of alcohol, drugs, or anything bad, will also have to have good sleep, and will have to let go every bad thing that happened in their lives, and will have to forgive every one, including their enemies.
The money that the godchildren will use for any type of initiation in the Ile cannot come from selling drugs, robbing a bank, or any type of ilegall money, they have have to be in other words worked. The non initiated can accept donations for family, the ile, and friends.
The Ile, and godmother, have to be sure that the godchildren orisha is for sure what they were told, if the godmother dont feel is right, they will confirm the Orisha with Orula on a consultation in person with the godchildren, babalawo, and godmother.
The Ile ask that the person that will become a godchildren of the house is respectful, open to learn, honest and sincere.
It is impossible to properly initiate a person at any level in Santeria via mail or the Internet. All the ceremonies involved in these initiations require the initiate to be physically present and without these ceremonies being done, the so-called 'initiation' is invalid and worthless. No serious practitioner of the religion will recognize them and they are considered unethical in the extreme. If you come upon anyone offering such 'initiations' run, don't walk away from them. These initiations would harm you if they actually had any power in the first place.
The Ilekes or Necklaces (Collares in Spanish)
Receiving your Ilekes or Necklaces puts you under the protection and blessings of your Godparents' Orishas and makes you a part of their Ilé or Orisha House. The Ilekes are sacred and are the banners of the Orishas and act as a sign of the Orishas presence and protection. The preparations usually take several days to a week as several complex ceremonies are involved. The ceremony of receiving your ilekes itself takes several hours as it is made up of several rites, and the new initiate should be prepared to 'make a day of it' as they will be expected to go home and rest for the remainder of the evening. In many ways this ceremony is an equivalent to the ceremony of Baptism practiced by some religions. It is the ceremonial entrance into our religion and into a new life as a follower of the Orishas. Only Santeras and Santeros can perform this ceremony and this ceremony cannot be performed by Babalawos.
Expectations: We ask our godchildren to be open to learn, to be respectful to the sisters and brothers of the Ile
